Air junkie as well... well more correctly anything with guns and a prop. Don't mind jets but not nearly as cool IMO. Also if I recall I do remember hearing the F-22 project got junked.. Not sure however, But I think they've opted to just upgrade the F15 into some more advanced.

This to me is probably the most elegant and wonderful of the WW2 fighters to me.

I dig the P-38 but when it comes to prop fighters, nothing beats the P-51 in my book. From the sound of the Merlin pulling it along to the incredible performance capabilities of a plane designed in the 30s. (And yes, I know the Lightning was better in some regards than the Mustang)

My FBO is right next door to Jack Roush's. He has (or had) three of them. Though I think he only may have two now. Ill tell you what, if you want to see what a p-51 is really capable of, watch him fly one day. He beats the living PISS out of his planes. Ive seen him land dead stick a few times too (though not in a mustang).

As for the P-38....

Ive had a perpetual wet dream of building a P-38 from the ground up using modern materials and avionics......and then bolting a couple of these beasts to the plane, nacelles and all. I photoshopped my idea up a few years ago, it looked pretty cool.

Allison 501 turboprop (A.K.A. the T56), 4350 hp, weighs just under 2000 lbs. Used on the L-188, P-3, C-130, and others.

FYI the guy under the arrow is me. Wink

I love the sound of those internal superchargers shredding air. They almost sound like a turbine at full throttle from the front.

Heres another very unique sounding airplane.

GOD I feel so privileged to have flown on these.

Nearly identical except for a different nose cone and a higher rated speed.

The L-188 had issues where (basically) a wing would fall off in flight. The FAA then restricted its speed to under 400 kts. But the military never followed these restrictions on their P3.

I really miss the fact that we (civilians) dont have an SST anymore. Even if no normal person could afford to fly on one, and even though the airlines lost money on the venture, it still is disheartening that it doesnt exist anymore. Its almost like we took a technological step backwards when the concord was decommissioned.

there was that boeing sonic cruiser, but it wasn't really supersonic, cost a lot, and no airlines took interest.  I guess the only way to even get close to SS again is to make the sonic boom really minimal. another problem is how degraded airline transport is now, its just a expensive bus ride, don't think many will pay to ride it. and i wonder, if the dc-10 never had that piece of metal fall of the engine, and the concorde never crashed, would it still be in service?

I don't feel like quoting every response since my last post, but I will say those were all some great vids. Having heard a few of these Warbirds at the Air Show this past week, I have rejuvenated my love for them. But you still can't beat an F/A-18 hornet doing a sneak pass at about 700 mph at a distance of that P-51 fly by in the first vid. Its scary good.

Anyways, FFD, the project for the P-38 sound cool and I hope you can get it off the ground one day. I'd love to get a pilot's license and have a spare million or so to buy my own P-51. And correct me if I am wrong, but do those Electras use the same engines on the C-130? Those gunships fly over my house from time to time, usually practicing, and they sound almost exactly the same. Only the C-130 is a few octaves louder!

As for the SST, I too wish they would have continued on with developing the technology and making it possible for us puny civvies to fly like the finest of the air force. Wasn't Gulfstream or NASA working on a nose cone attachment that would have mitigated the boom associated with faster than mach 1 travel? I can only imagine what life would have been like if the B2707 would have made it past the "wood" stage and that the Russian's Tupelov didn't have the troubles that it did. We all be anywhere on Earth within 12 hours.

This image is by far the biggest reason I am upset that I won't ever get the chance to fly Concorde:

On the subject of low passes... all I had to say was holy jeeze.

WHAT A PASS!

We used to have an official fighter wing here called the 119th "Happy Hooligans". They flew F16s for as long as I can remember. Then, because of the age of the airplanes (oldest 16s in the fleet) and because of high maintenance required, the "objectives" were changed. Currently C-21s fly out of the area and we have Predator control centered here. (The Predators are in GFAFB but the pilots fly them from here) However, the C-21s will be replaced by the C-27s basically making us one of their air lift base of operations.
