Darracq was a French automaker founded in 1896 founded by bicycle maker Alexandre Darracq.  The company's first product was actually a motorized bicycle that made 1.2 hp.  Darracq then ventured into electric vehicles for a few years before beginning production of an automobile powered by a gasoline engine.  Once this became doable with a degree of reliability (relatively speaking), Darracq set his sights on making his product faster.  MUCH faster.

This 1905 Darracq Land Speed Racer reached 122.45 mph on the sand in Daytona Beach, Florida in 1906.  Power comes from an ohv V-8 displacing 1,551 cubic inches, (that's 25.4L).  The 200 hp it produced made it the Veyron of its day.  In an era 110 years ago when a new Ford Model F made 12 hp and a Rolls-Royce made 30 hp, 200 hp was unbelievable.

Just make sure your foot doesn't slip off of the footrest.

Awesome car !  For further reading and more pics, check out this theoldmotor.com post .  .  .
