MILWAUKEE -- NASCAR team owner Jack Roush was in serious but stable condition after walking away from a plane crash in Wisconsin on Tuesday night.
"There are injuries. Possible surgery," Roush Fenway Racing president Geoff Smith said in a text message to The Associated Press. "But he walked out of the plane."
Smith confirmed that the plane belonged to Roush, and he was flying it. Smith said Roush's injuries include facial lacerations.
NASCAR chairman and CEO Brian France offered best wishes through a statement.
"On behalf of the NASCAR industry our hearts and prayers go out to Jack Roush, the Roush family and Roush Fenway Racing. All of us are looking forward to a full and speedy recovery," the statement read.
Roush, an aviation buff, was attending the Experimental Aircraft Association's annual AirVenture in Oshkosh, Wis., this week.
In a statement on the EAA Web site, officials said a Beechcraft Premier business jet registered to Roush Fenway Racing, LLC was involved in a landing accident at Wittman Regional Airport in Oshkosh.
The accident occurred at approximately 7:15 p.m. ET, the statement said.
According to the EAA, the National Transportation Safety Board and Winnebago County Sheriff's Department confirmed that two occupants on board were Roush and Brenda Stricklin of Plymouth, Mich.
"Each exited the aircraft following the accident," the statement said. "Both were transported to local hospitals, with Roush in serious but stable condition and [Stricklin] with non-life threatening injuries. The NTSB is leading the investigation into the accident."
According to a statement from the team, Roush was landing his plane when the accident occurred.
"Dr. Kevin Wasco, the attending physician, says that Roush is in serious but stable condition," the team's statement said. "His injuries are not life threatening."
The Beechcraft Premier jet pancaked onto the runway and broke in half and no flames or smoke were seen, according to the aviation news website AVweb.com. Jason McDowell, an aviation photographer who was at the airport, tweeted a photo of team co-owner Jack Roush exiting the plane with a bloody face.
Jack Roush nearly lost his life while piloting a small plane near Troy, Ala., on his 60th birthday on April 19, 2002. He hit a power line and landed upside down in eight feet of water. The longtime NASCAR team owner was not breathing when he was rescued and sustained a broken leg, a collapsed lung and head injuries.
Roush owns several aircraft, including a World War II-vintage P-51 Mustang.
After having success in dragsters and sports car racing, Roush -- a former Ford engineer and college physics teacher -- founded his NASCAR team in 1988. Known for his trademark Panama-style hat, academic speaking style and love for tinkering with anything mechanical, he won championships in NASCAR's top series with Matt Kenseth in 2003 and Kurt Busch in 2004.
Since 2007, Roush has partnered with the Fenway Sports Group, the sports marketing arm of the Boston Red Sox's parent company.
The cat in the hat must have nine lives. I think he needs to stay the hell out of flying machines, or at least let someone else do the piloting.

Derek might be able to back be up on this...
But from what I've heard, landing at Osh is extremely hard to do, especially during the AirVenture and Fly-in events. You have to deal with propwash/jetwash while dealing with crosswinds.
Until I hear more from the NTSB, I'm not going to put it on pilot error.

When asked why they shot the suspect 68 times, Sheriff Grady Judd responded with "That's all the bullets we had."

MERGED (instead of closed)
Jack Roush, yesterday night, crashed his private jet while on approach to oshkosh for the annual air show there.
His jet was a small beechcraft, only a year or two old. I remember the day he received delivery of it. It was custom painted to match his P-51's, and representatives from beech came with the plane to give him a full day of demonstrations on how to operate it and all of its other features. Since delivery, he typically took it out once a week (he is an avid pilot) to fly to wherever his race team was that weekend. Beautiful airplane, now destroyed.
He was on approach into oshkosh, and witnesses say he was low and slow. He attempted to go full throttle and attempt a go-around, however it was too late, the aircraft stalled, and broke up on impact. The aircraft split in half right in front of the rear mounted engines. All aboard (jack and his GF) walked away, though Jack suffered a broken nose. A friend who was there sent me a pic of him exiting the aircraft on his own two feet, with his shirt covered in blood.
I will attempt to find images of said crash, but his past accident (he rear ended a small plane in his P-51, turning the empennage into ribbons) was nowhere to be found online, even though I had seen hard copy photos of it.

I am.
Low + slow + going below Vmc = exactly what happened to him.
I can almost guarantee he, as a result of being low and slow, pitched up to avoid CFIT. As a result, the aircraft went below Vmc/ Vso and lift was lost. Anyone who is in an airplane, trained professional or not, in a panic situation will pull back on the yoke to avoid contact with the ground. Ive done it before, every other pilot I know has done it, but its something you DONT do. Jack, unfortunately, was too low to recover.
Not only that, but I know how Jack flies. He flies his planes like people drive his mustangs. He beats the living shit out of everything. I have seen him land dead stick multiple times after blowing his engine, as well as going vertical after takeoff/ buzzing the airfield at 300+ (both illegal). But, no one reports him, because hes jack, and people like watching. So far, hes only crashed once, and had one taxi incident (the rear ended plane). As far as his first accident, I dont know details other than he bit it in a lake. The second incident, he couldnt see over the long nose of his P-51, and since it was a tight airfield he could taxi in S-turns. It was pilot error in that case, but it was an honest oops.

Jacks GF came home today in a 3 hole falcon. She looked pretty banged up. She had a heavy wrap on her elbow and she was walking with a good limp. I didnt see Jack get off though. I saw hs trademark hat come out of the luggage bay, but I didnt see the man. My guess is he's going to be in oshkosh for a little while and the GF wanted to GTFO.
