1  The Auto Lounge . . . / General Automotive Discussion / Re: What are your thoughts on history reports? on: May 26, 2013, 11:45:20 AM
in Holland, we dont have an online check like CarFax or Autocheck....basically, we purely rely on car documents supplied with the car and an organization called NAP, which checks the mileage (kilometers) on the cars, IF the dealership is part of that same NAP organization.

If the car has no historical documents AND the dealership is not registered at the NAP, well....its a gamble...lol....

Ill be posting some pictures of the HKS, i'll also try to make a videoclip/soundclip...

How about a Legacy Outback? Its heightenned for (kinda) off road use, has the same engine specs as most models, awd (duh)....

As far as experiences go, I dont know much about off road capabilities (other than watching top gear last week, lol), but I do have a lot of friends with Impreza WRX's, STI's and such, some of them tuned to above 500 hp without any problems, being driven almost daily.......thats as much help as I can be I think....

Well, it has happened.....I got my ride....

As I had stated a couple of times before on this forum, I went looking for a new ride....

Initially, I had quite a list of cars that fitted my budget...to give you guys (as fellow car enthousiasts) an idea of my list:

2000's Renault Clio Sport
Honda Civic EK (hatch/coupe)
Mazda MX5 (NB preferrebly)
Fiat Punto HGT (Abarth)
Peugeot 206 GTI/RC

These are a couple of cars I searched for, that were on my list. As you can see, the cars I looked at are fairly lightweight, hatchback/coupe style cars....
The main reasons for going for such a ride are that 1) I am quite a young fellow, owning a high-powered, heavy weight car is not do-able in this anti-car country for a youngster like me. 2) I have been driving the Audi for almost 5 years now, even though I have quite the driving experience, I still consider myself a beginner when it comes to the more powerful rides. I have driven sports cars for my work before, but my daily driver has always been a fwd 130-bhp powered fwd sedan, comparing it with an e36 325i or something like that is compared apples with peaches, therefore I wanted to start out slower and more relaxed....there will always be time and money for something faster later in life.

After searching on the net, visiting dealerships and sellers, talking to people (including TAL), reading reviews and such and doing test drives, I had narrowed down my list to just a couple of cars. The Civic's I had test driven, I was very positive about and these cars were rock solid. The only problem with the Civic's were that, I was particularly looking at either the 1.5 VTEC versions or the VTI's. There weren't any VTI's, maybe a handful, but these were either unfinished project cars or beat examples.

The Renaults and Peugeots dropped off the list because these cars, from this particular era, were not the most reliable ones and I cant be kept busy with repairing things all the time either...

One of the other cars still on the list were the MX5's.....I had not test driven one yet but did read a lot on them. In terms of reliability, there was nothing to be detected. All of the things I read online and in reviews showed me that these cars were basically indestructable. This not only strengthen my feeling towards the MX, I decided to really put my focus on this car, as it fit the bill best. It was lightweight (not only fun, but also cheap seeing as taxes in Holland are based on the weight of the car), it has plenty of power (110 bhp is plentyful for me) and as a bonus, it is rwd as well!

After deciding on the make and model, the next thing (usually) is to find an example that meets your criteria. My personal boundaries (which I did not really respect with certain cars) were not more than 200.000 KM's on the odo, younger than 1998 and specifically with the MX, a hardtop.

After searching for a good example online for a longer while, my eye fell for a black 1.6 NB from 1999. Imported from Germany with 141.269 km's on the clock. I decided to call the gentleman to make an appointement to see the car and maybe get a test drive.

I brought a friend with me (a mechanic) and we went off. The lot was situated in a province with a lot of farmland, in the south of Holland. This really took a load off my chest, knowing that in cities, cars tend to not be taken care of as properly as they are in less populated area's (this is not a myth, at least, not for Holland).

After an hour drive, we arrived at the car lot. The MX was sitting at the front garage door, shining with all its glory, as it was saying "pick me, pick me, pick me". First thing both me and my friend noticed about the car was that, for a car from 1999, it was really, really shining great....maybe too great. We talked to the shop manager, walked around the car, opened the hood, the trunk, checked underneath, did a whole walkaround as you would say....Everything seemed fine. But still, that paint was bothering us.

After checking everything, my friend and me both concluded that the car must have had a small fender bender to the left front side and the previous owner decided to re-paint the whole car. Since all of the parts that were in the car were orgininal and the underneath of the car looked perfect, my friend advised on us taking it out for a drive and really checking everything during driving. Since I had him with me, I let him drive as well.

The test drive went great, the car felt great, no weird sounds, no weird feeling in the steering or during accelaretion or braking. After returning to the shop, I had let the shop manager know that I was absolutely interested in the car, but I was not really comfortable with the car being painted all over and was scared that there might be something wrong.

Fortunately, all of the original papers (from Germany) were all in the car and all of the receipts and documents were included as well. The car had suffered a small impact in the left front fender. Instead of doing one fender with colour difference, the owner decided to repaint it completely (repainting a car in Holland costs at least 2000 euros), order a new soft top as well (soft tops go for at least 450 euros) and slap winter tyres on it (good, because it had been snowing in Holland).

In the meantime, I had checked and driven a couple of other MX's (for comparison) and talk to some owners online and after thinking a few days, I decided to make the shop manager an offer. I really got into that black NB, loved the colour, loved the drive, the only downside was the softtop. It was watertight, looked great, was only 6 months old, yes it was against my original plans, but heck, I couldnt pass this offer.

The shop manager contacted me, agreed on the offer (hmm, I shouldve made a lower offer, but, fudge it), I handled all the finances and paperwork and am now a proud owner of a Mazda MX-5 1.6 NB...Cheesy:D:D:D

So, VTEC, when are we starting our own hairsalon???

The photo's are of bad quality (phone pictures plus shitty weather), but I'll keep this thread updated with pictures and all of the stuff that will be done with the car..Smiley
